The Indian men’s hockey team bounced back strongly from their opening defeat in the FIH Pro League, securing a 2-0 victory over Spain at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday. After a 3-1 loss on Saturday, India showcased improved intensity and composure, controlling possession and delivering a strong defensive performance.
Unlike their opening game, India appeared more structured from the first whistle. While they dominated possession, clear attacking chances were limited in the first half as their moves repeatedly broke down near the circle.
At halftime, head coach Craig Fulton urged his team to be more patient in the final third and focus on an extra pass rather than forcing play. The tactical shift paid off swiftly in the second half.
India took the lead in the third quarter through Mandeep Singh, who has struggled for goals at both international level and in the Hockey India League. The breakthrough came from a quick free-hit restart, leading to a shot from Dilpreet Singh inside the circle. Although the initial attempt was saved, Mandeep capitalized on the rebound, slotting it into an open net.
Minutes later, Dilpreet doubled India’s advantage. Mandeep, involved again, turned inside the circle before laying off a pass to Gurjant Singh. Though Gurjant’s shot was scuffed, the ball deflected kindly to Dilpreet, who calmly lifted it over the Spanish goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
The fourth quarter saw India withstand intense pressure as Spain earned multiple penalty corners. However, India’s defense stood firm, with goalkeeper Suraj Karkera making crucial saves. Defenders Jugraj Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh also put in impressive performances, ensuring India maintained their clean sheet.
The win marks an important response from India in the FIH Pro League, giving them momentum as they look to build on this performance in upcoming matches.
