The stage is set for a high-stakes finale in Jhansi as Madhya Pradesh and Punjab booked their spots in the final of the 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2025 with thrilling semifinal victories on Sunday.
Madhya Pradesh opened the day’s proceedings with an emphatic 5-3 win over Manipur, showcasing both flair and resilience. Captain Yousuf Affan led from the front, netting twice in the 5th and 34th minutes. He was ably supported by Ali Ahmad, who struck in the 7th and 15th minutes, giving MP a commanding lead. Mohammad Zaid Khan added a fifth goal in the 49th minute, ensuring MP’s path to the final was secured despite a spirited late fightback from Manipur.
Manipur’s comeback attempt saw them score three times in a frantic second half. Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh (47’) opened their account, followed by goals from captain Chinglensana Singh Kangujam (50’) and Laishram Dipu Singh (53’). However, the deficit proved too steep to overcome.
In the second semifinal, Punjab edged out hosts Uttar Pradesh 4-3 in a nail-biting encounter. Jasjit Singh Kular starred for Punjab with a brace (14’, 40’), while Harjeet Singh (22’) and Jugraj Singh (45’) also found the back of the net. Punjab maintained composure in the face of a strong challenge from UP, who kept pushing till the final whistle.
Uttar Pradesh’s hopes were kept alive by Sharda Nand Tiwari’s quickfire double in the 41st and 43rd minutes, and a goal from Pawan Rajbhar. But despite their relentless efforts, an equaliser remained elusive.
With their semifinal victories, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab now stand just one match away from national glory. The championship final is set to take place on April 15 at 7:00 PM, promising a clash of intensity and talent as both teams vie for the prestigious title.
Earlier the same day, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh will compete for the third-place position in the tournament at 5:00 PM, also in Division ‘A’.
As the sun sets on a thrilling tournament in Jhansi, all eyes will be on the finale — a battle between a spirited MP side and a confident Punjab outfit, each determined to etch their name in Indian hockey history.
