Captain G. Sathiyan produced a captain’s performance as Dabang Delhi TTC kept their Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 semifinal hopes alive with a hard-fought victory over Ahmedabad APL Pipers at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium on Monday.
With Dempo Goa Challengers, U Mumba TT and HVR Kolkata Thunder Blades already assured of the first three semifinal spots, both Delhi and Ahmedabad entered the contest knowing that only a convincing win would keep their qualification hopes intact. The tie remained evenly poised through the opening three matches, with Dabang Delhi holding a narrow 5-4 advantage, leaving Sathiyan with the responsibility of delivering in the crucial fourth match against Payas Jain.
The experienced paddler rose to the occasion, registering a clean sweep over Payas, who had troubled him over the past couple of seasons. The victory proved decisive in ensuring Delhi remained in the race for the playoffs.
Payas looked set to give Ahmedabad the upper hand after racing to a 10-6 lead in the opening game. His attacking play repeatedly breached Sathiyan’s defence, putting the Delhi captain under pressure. However, Sathiyan responded with remarkable composure, winning five consecutive points to snatch the game from the jaws of defeat.
The dramatic turnaround shifted the momentum firmly in Sathiyan’s favour. He adopted a more aggressive approach in the second game and secured it comfortably, putting himself within touching distance of a crucial straight-games victory.
The third game also tested the veteran’s resolve as he fell behind 2-5. Sathiyan once again displayed his experience, maintaining relentless pressure on Payas and forcing errors at key moments before completing the clean sweep that ultimately separated the two teams.
Ahmedabad APL Pipers remained mathematically alive in the semifinal race thanks to Manika Batra, who defeated Sutirtha Mukherjee in the final match of the tie. Had Sutirtha emerged victorious, Dabang Delhi would have eliminated Ahmedabad from playoff contention.
The result leaves Delhi’s fate in its own hands heading into its final league fixture against PBG Pune Jaguars on Thursday. With the qualification scenarios now clear, Dabang Delhi will know exactly what is required to secure a place in the semifinals as the race for the final playoff berth reaches its climax.
