Alexander Zverev won his second Grand Slam title after beating Ben Shelton in the US Open final by 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York on Sunday. Zverev, who lost the New York Major final against Dominic Thiem in the past, claimed his maiden title at the Flushing Meadows.

The German was able to get an early break in the opening set and didn’t allow Shelton to settle. The lanky player played a dominated tiebreaker in the second set to put his noses in front.

The home favorite, Shelton, bounced back in the third set to stay alive in the contest however, Zverev dominated the fourth set to get over the line. Zverev was so much in the zone that he didn’t even realise he had won, thinking the score is 5-1 in the fourth set despite winning the Championship point.

“I want to thank my team. We went 30 years without winning a Grand Slam title and now we’ve won two within the span of three months,” Zverev said. “I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through. I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.”

Zverev was full of praise for Shelton after the American had an incredible run at the US Open.

“Ben, you’re an incredible player, an incredible person,” Zverev said to Shelton during the trophy ceremony. “This was your first Grand Slam final, but I already told you that you’re going to be back here many, many more times.”

Zverev will leave New York with a tour-leading 53 wins in 2026 and would look to continue his rich form in the rest of the season.
