Alexander Zverev won his sixth Masters 1000 title after beating Nicolas Jarry by 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. This is the second time when the German has won the Italian Open.
Zverev could not take his break point chances in the first set but finally broke the opponent’s serve in the 10th game. With this win, Zverev will climb to No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday.
This is the biggest title for Zverev after suffering a horrific ankle injury in the semifinals of the 2022 Roland Garros while playing against Rafael Nadal. Zverev said it is a special feeling to win in Rome.
“Obviously winning my first ever [Masters] here in Rome and winning my first after my injury also in Rome, so Rome is a very special place for me,” Zverev said. “It is a very, very special week.”
Meanwhile, Zverev also lauded Nicolas Jarry for his impressive run to the final and pushing him in the summit clash. Jarry had stunned players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul before the final but this was his first Masters 1000 title match.
“He is playing huge and you can see by the players he has beaten here this week,” Zverev said when asked about Jarry. “Playing incredible tennis. I told him if he continues to play like that he will have many chances at this level. Today I am extremely happy to be the winner.”
With this win, Zvered improved his H2H record against Jarry to 5-2. Zverev dropped a single set on his way to the title in Rome and would look to continue his rich form at the upcoming French Open. Roland Garros main draw matches will begin on May 26.
