Legendary Andre Agassi reckons Andy Murray belongs in the same category as the Big Three – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Murray won three Slams in his glittering career, winning Wimbledon twice and the US Open.
In addition to his Grand Slam titles, Murray won two Olympic gold medals in men’s singles (2012 and 2016). The Brit had to face the Big Three when they were at the peak of their prowess and he did give them a run for their money.
Murray suffered a nearly career-ending hip injury but still showed the grit and gumption to make a solid comeback to the tour. The Briton reached 11 Grand Slams finals in his career, and every loss came against either Djokovic or Federer.
Speaking to New Balls Please!, Agassi said: “I think you can’t ignore Andy Murray because he was able to have a say at the end of these tournaments during the big three era.
“Because he was able to do that he is very special. I think it’s a big four. He got to world number one at the end, won multiple Grand Slams, beat two of the three at least to win his Slams.”
The American feels Murray would have won more Slams if he had played in another era.
“It was a remarkable accomplishment by Andy Murray. But those three occupying 66 Grand Slams between three guys, in the same era, come on! Imagine if one of them wasn’t there!
“Does that mean they would have won 35 majors? Who knows. This was a magical generation in our history.”
Murray ended his career with 46 career titles, which is the 15th best in the Open Era.
