Carlos Alcaraz has tipped Alexander Zverev as the best player in the world right now. Zverev recently won the second Slam of his career, winning the US Open after beating home favorite Ben Shelton in a four-set contest.
Earlier in the season, the German had won his maiden Major at the Roland Garros after beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. The lanky player also made it to the final of the Wimbledon but could not cross the last hurdle against Jannik Sinner.
Zverev is currently the second ranked player in the PIF ATP rankings with 9690 points under his belt.
Alcaraz and Zverev are currently in London, where they will represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup.
“[Zverev] is probably the best player in the world right now, so having him by my side is going to be a great weapon that we are going to use,” Alcaraz said in London. “Hopefully we are going to get many points and I am going to try to [lift] him up as much as I can. I missed lifting the trophy last year, so I am going to do whatever it takes to do it this year.”
Meanwhile, Alcaraz had missed almost four months of action due to a wrist injury and recently made a comeback to the tour at the New York Major, where he suffered a quarterfinal loss against eventual finalist Ben Shelton.
“I am feeling great and practising well,” Alcaraz added. “The US Open was a great test for me, so I can’t wait to play here.”
After missing Wimbledon and the Queen’s tournament due to injury, Alcaraz is looking forward to playing in London.
“It is great to be playing in London. It is the first time [I’ve played] in London this year, so I am excited. I had my first practice on the O2 for the first time in my life. It is really special and feels great to be here,” Alcaraz said.
“The fans love it here. They love the O2. Not only in tennis but in everything. I think they are going to love it. I loved it. It is super beautiful and I can’t wait to see the stadium packed. I am pretty sure we are going to deliver great tennis and a great show for the people and I think everybody and everything is going to be great.”
Alcaraz will make his third appearance at the Laver Cup.
