Daniil Medvedev continued his rich form on the tour, beating Jack Draper in the Indian Wells quarterfinals on Thursday. Medvedev registered a 6-1, 7-5 win against the Brit in the BNP Paribas Open, where he has qualified for the semi-finals for the fourth consecutive year.
The ex-World No.1 said he played at an unbelievable level in the opening set against the left-hander and was delighted with his game.
“The first set was unreal, I couldn’t miss a ball,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview. “It was an unbelievable level. Second set, he tried to give everything he had, and he had an opportunity. I had one at 4-all, I should’ve done much better, but it happens. In general, I’m super happy with the way I’m playing now and I’m looking forward.”
Medvedev will next face World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, Alexander Zverev bested Arthur Fils by 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday in the other quarterfinal. After qualifying for the semis, the German became just the fifth player to complete the set of last-four appearances at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events since the series began in 1990, joining former No. 1s Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray.
“It was definitely a very good match,” said Zverev, who improved to 5-2 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Fils. “Arthur is somebody who — when he’s healthy — is one of the best players in the world. He was on the way to the Top 10 last year, but an injury stopped him. I’m sure he’s going to be back at that level very soon.”
Zverev will next face the World No.2 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
