The World No 2 Daniil Medvedev has pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters 2021 after he tested for Covid-19, the tournament organizers and the ATP have confirmed the news. The ATP released the statement which revealed that the Russian had to pull out of the event after he had contracted the virus.
“Following the return of a positive COVID-19 test result on 12 April 2021, World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev has been withdrawn from the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters,” the statement said.
“He has been replaced in the singles second round (following a first-round Bye) and has been withdrawn from doubles competition,” reads the statement further.
The Russian has been put into isolation and the medical team is looking after him. Medvedev had won back-to-back Masters 1000 titles in Paris and London last year but he will miss this year’s event.
Meanwhile, it is also known that Medvedev was training with World No. 3 Rafael Nadal, which has put the participation of the Spaniard in doubt. Furthermore, Medvedev is also reported to have a chat with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. However, there is no official word on Nadal and Djokovic’s isolation.
“It’s a big disappointment not to play in Monte-Carlo. My focus is now on recovery and I look forward to getting back out on Tour as soon and as safely as possible,” the statement quotes Medvedev as saying.
On the other hand, Medvedev had recently criticized the postponement of the French Open, which will now begin one week later from its scheduled date. The clay-court tournament was all set to begin on May 23 but now it will be kickstart from May 30.
Medvedev had qualified for the final of the Australian Open, in which he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
