Former British No.1 Greg Rusedski has suggested Novak Djokovic to skip Roland Garros if he wants to have a real shot at Wimbledon. Rusedski praised Novak Djokovic for his Australian Open run as the Serbian made it to the final but could not go past Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic registered an epic five-set win against Jannik Sinner in the semifinal clash at the Happy Slam, but he didn’t have enough in his tank for the final clash. Rusedski said the Serbian might not be able to win at the French Open and he should keep his body fresh for Wimbledon.
“Djokovic fans can still have hope. Imagine if he plays this well at Wimbledon. He has a real chance of winning the title. I think Roland-Garros is out of his reach, simply because of his physique, but for all Djokovic fans, what a two weeks it’s been! He beat Sinner, but couldn’t follow it up. And he’s showing that on any day of a Grand Slam tournament, he can be the best,” Rusedski said on Off Court with Greg.
The Brit said Djokovic’s chances of winning back-to-back against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are bleak, and thus he needs to be at the top of his fitness and game.
“The problem is beating Sinner and Alcaraz back-to-back, and that’s always a difficult puzzle to solve when you’re 38 and your body doesn’t bounce back like Carlos’s, who is still very young. He was like a rubber band. He was back physically. I wonder if Djokovic will skip Roland-Garros and just play Wimbledon this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did,” Rusedski stated.
Djokovic is next expected to play in the Qatar Open.
