I am going to keep playing: Andy Murray on his retirement

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has squashed his retirement rumours as he stated that he wants to keep playing. Murray believes he can compete at the top level despite injuries hampering his career. The Briton has undergone two hip surgeries and it has been tough for him since he has made his comeback.

Murray got off to a winning start in Wimbledon as he won his Round 1 against Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili. The former World No. 1 won by 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and he reckons that he can compete at the top level.

Nikoloz Basilashvili is seeded 24 for Wimbledon but Murray, who hasn’t played a lot of matches in the recent past was able to win. In fact, this was Murray’s first win in Wimbledon since 2017 as he played at the top of his game.

“I keep getting asked ‘is this my last Wimbledon, my last match?’ No, I’m going to keep playing. I want to play. I’m enjoying it. I can still play at the highest level. He [Basilashvili] is ranked 28 in the world, I’ve hardly played any matches and I beat him. So I’ll keep going,” a pleased Andy Murray said in an on-court interview after the match.

Murray had a 5-0 lead in the third set and it looked like that the match would be over in a jiffy. However, the Georgian made a roaring comeback into the contest as he won seven games in a row to force the fourth set. Murray kept his cool and won the fourth set by 6-3 to clinch his win.

“It’s amazing to be back playing out here on Centre Court again, in such a brilliant atmosphere. It’s something I’ve really missed. I was obviously so disappointed to have lost the third set and had to remember what I was doing that got me in a winning position. I managed to turn it back around,” Murray added.

Murray is currently ranked 118 in the World and he still has a long way to go. The first Round will definitely add a shot in the arm for Murray and he will look to carry the same form in the second round match.
