I have to look at myself, says Alexander Zverev after Miami Open exit

Top seed Alexander Zverev admitted he needs to take a look at his game after the Miami Open exit on Wednesday. The German suffered a 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 loss against France’ Arthur Fils at the Hard Rock Stadium.

The lanky player was leading by 3-1 in the deciding set but veered off the track when it mattered the most.

Zverev is 11-6 in the ongoing season after earlier making it to the Australian Open final, where he lost to the World No.1 Jannik Sinner.

“I have been losing a lot of matches that I feel like I couldn’t control lately,” Zverev said after his defeat to the 20-year-old Fils. “It was similar again today. So I have to look at myself more than anything else.”

“I think I definitely played better here than I did the last few weeks, but I’m up a break in the third, there is no reason for me to lose this match,” Zverev added. “I go on to lose four games in a row. In Indian Wells I’m serving for the match, and in Rio I am up 4-1 in the third. In Buenos Aires I was up a set and a break. I’m just losing a lot of matches from a winning position right now. I need to change that.”

Earlier, Zverev squandered the chance to serve out the match in his defeat to Tallon Griekspoor in the opening game of the Indian Wells Masters.

Zverev would look to come up with an improved performance in the upcoming tournaments.

Arthur Fils will face Czech’s Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinal on Thursday.
