World No.1 Novak Djokovic created history as he won his 18th slam by winning the Australian Open. Djokovic defeated the World No. 4, Daniil Medvedev, by 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to win his 9th Australian Open title. With this massive win, Djokovic has also made sure that he will leapfrog Roger Federer’s record.
In the first week of March, Djokovic will break Federer’s record of most weeks as a World No. 1. With the ranking record now under his belt, Djokovic has stated that he can focus of all his attention on slams.
Djokovic is now only two slams away from matching Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s tally of most majors and he wants to focus his energy more on the big tournaments. The Serbian is going to turn 34 this year and he has also maintained his fitness. Thus, Djokovic will look to be at his best in the major events.
Meanwhile, with the current situation of Covid-19, it is also difficult for the players to participate in a lot of tournaments. Hence, the big players are expected to handpick the major tournaments in 2021.
“Now, after achieving the historic No. 1 ranking for the longest weeks at No.1, it’s going to be a relief for me because I’m going to focus all my attention on Slams, mostly. When you are going for No. 1 rankings, you kind of have to be playing the entire season,” said Djokovic.
“My goals will adapt and will shift a little bit, which means that I will have an opportunity to do that which, as a father and a husband, I’m really looking forward to that. Judging by what we’re seeing around the world, having family on the road with me will be a very difficult task,” remarked Djokovic.
Djokovic was expected to take part in the Dubai Open but he has raised his doubts over his participation. The talisman played at the top of his game in the AO 2021 and he will look to continue his good show in 2021 and set new standards.
