Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has admitted that it was not easy for him to end his match that way against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon 2021. Federer lost in straight sets by 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 as the 24th-year old thoroughly dominated the contest against his idol on centre court.
In fact, Federer was bagelled for the first time in Wimbledon in the third set by Hurkacz. Furthermore, this was the second time in Federer’s career that he was bagelled in a set.
Meanwhile, it was one-way traffic in the third set as Federer failed to match his opponent. The Swiss Maestro admitted that it was difficult last couple of games for him as he is not used to getting dominated like that in Wimbledon. Federer was able to win only 15 points in the third set and could not win a single game as his serve was broken thrice.
“It was tough to end the match that way. I knew there was no coming back in the last couple of games. I’m not used to that kind of situation that much, especially not here at Wimbledon. As you said, the crowd was amazing; that’s why I still play”.
“It was nice to see a packed stadium, but unfortunately, they witnessed my straight-sets defeat. I’m super grateful for all the support I’ve gotten here over the years. You can see they are happy for being out, watching tennis and supporting players,” Roger Federer said.
Federer was beaten in an hour and 48 minutes as Hurkacz made it to his maiden Grand slam semifinal. The former World No.1 also said that he is not sure whether he will return to play in Wimbledon in 2022.
Meanwhile, Federer has decided to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics due to knee injury. Federer will now look to make a comeback in the US Open.
