World No.1 Jannik Sinner kickstarted his French Open campaign with a ruthless 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win against France’s wild card Clement Tabur at Court Philippe-Chatrier on Tuesday. Sinner dominated the 26-year-old from the get-go, finishing the opening set in only 30 minutes. Tabur came up with a better performance in the next two sets but it was not enough against the Italian.
Sinner is aiming to become just the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam, joining one of the sport’s most exclusive clubs. The Roland Garros trophy is the only Slam which is missing from Sinner’s impressive cabinet.
“I’m very happy to be back here,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “It’s a very special place and I have great memories overall. First-round matches are never easy, but it’s even more special to start the tournament during a night session, so thank you all for staying out.”
Sinner smashed 40 winners and avoided facing a break point against the Frenchman as he brought his A-game to the court. The 24-year-old is currently on a 30-match winning streak as he has been in rich vein of form. The Italian will next face Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round on Thursday.
On the other hand, Adam Walton stunned World No.8 Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Walton was trailing by 2-4 in the final set but bounced back in style to win the next four games.
“I’m pretty tired right now,” Walton said in his on-court interview. “It was such an up-and-down match. I got off to a hot start, and I felt like the ebbs and flows of the match were quite large today. I’m just really proud of my efforts in the fifth set, to come from a break down to get the win.”
The Australian will next face USA’s Zachary Svajda in the second round on Thursday.
