Nick Kyrgios believes his compatriot Alex de Minaur will have a chance to win a Grand Slam if either Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz loses early. The controversial player said Alex might not be able to beat Sinner and Alcaraz as the duo is currently playing at a really high level.
Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated on the tour in the last two years. The pair have shared the eight Majors, winning four titles each.
Meanwhile, Alex de Minaur collected the tenth title of his career by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Washington Open and he had an impressive run in 2025. However, the Australian could not get any wins against Alcaraz and Sinner and he is yet to beat either Alcaraz or Sinner.
Alcaraz has a 5-0 record against de Minaur whereas Sinner has a 13-0 win-loss record against the Australian.
Nick Kyrgios said while speaking at the Atlanta Cup, “Alex will struggle in a best-of-five action at Majors, given how Carlos and Jannik are playing right now. However, if one of them suffers an early defeat, Alex stands among three or four players who have a chance to lift a trophy.”
“Whatever happens, and I know he may never win a Major or a Masters 1000 event, I still like what he is doing and how he plays. He has been in the top-10 for years and accomplished some amazing things.”
After suffering a quarterfinal loss against Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, de Minaur admitted he could go all the way in a Slam if he were on the other side of the draw.
He said, “If I’m in a different side of the draw, different little section, then who knows? I genuinely think I’m going to give myself opportunities, and I don’t think my peak is making quarter-finals in a slam.
“I see other players that have made it further, have made semis, have made finals, and I do believe that I can be amongst them. If they have been able to accomplish that, then why not me?”
