Novak Djokovic goes past Camilo Ugo Carabelli, makes ATP 1000 Masters history

Novak Djokovic continues to make new records on the tour. The Serbian defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli by 6-1, 7-6 in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday to register his 411th win in the ATP 1000 Masters. 

With this win, Djokovic went past his former rival Rafael Nadal’s tally of 410 wins and now has the most victories in the series since 1990.

The Serbian said these records keep him motivated to give his best at the top level.

“I’m honoured to have another milestone, another record broken,” said Djokovic. “There’s always something on the line, pretty much every time I play, and of course that motivates me to do well at tournaments.”

This was the first meeting between Djokovic and Camilo Ugo Carabelli and the former was able to break the latter’s serve in the second game of the opening set and raced to a 3-0 lead.

Djokovic was pleased with level despite being tested in the second set by the Argentine.

“I started off really well, 6-1, very similar to the first match two days ago,” reflected Djokovic. “Things got complicated in the second. I broke his serve, he rebroke my serve, and then we were kind of going toe to toe. I had some chances at 4-4 but I think it was fair to take the second set to a tie-break. Then, like two days ago, a perfect tie-break. Great serving when I needed to, and overall just pleased to get through.”

Novak Djokovic will face Lorenzo Musetti, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round in three-set contest, in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
