A boy born on 22nd May 1987 in Belgrade, the city in Yugoslavia, grew up with a dream of being the best in the sport of Tennis. He used to make replicas of Wimbledon Trophy with the items in his room. Little did even his father know that one day his son will be counted among the greatest ever, who graced the courts of Tennis.
Novak Djokovic claimed the sixth Wimbledon title of his career and that has brought him neck to neck with his old rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The Serbian carried on his brilliant form of Roland Garros to Wimbledon and was in absolute rhythm throughout the tournament. Though 25 year old Italian Matteo Berrettini made early progress by winning the first set in tie break 7-6, the 34 year old Serb took the driver seat as the game matured.
While addressing the crowd in the center court during the presentation, the crowned champion said his determination is as firm as ever for the slams ahead and how Federer and Nadal helped him in his career.
“In this era, with great players like Roger and Rafa, it will be difficult to consistently win big titles. I hope I can win four or five, but I know just how hard I’ll have to work for those. They have helped me in realising what I need to do in order to get stronger mentally and physically”, said Novak.
The 34-year old Serbian further added how Wimbledon was always the most important tournament for him. “When I was a little boy, I used to make the Wimbledon trophy out of materials in my room, imagining I’d be standing here one day” said Novak while keeping the trophy tightly under his grip.
With his 20th grand slam under his belt and upcoming US Open in September, Novak can aim to surpass his arch rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and given his form there is no stopping Novak.
This generation has witnessed not just one but three greatest players who have graced the courts by their determination and pure class. And as Novak said, there will be no stopping the big three, the fans can surely expect more greatness and iconic Tennis moments ahead.
