Veteran Stan Wawrinka believes the current level of the new generation is better than the previous one. The Swiss star reckons the duo of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are playing at a very high level and thus have reaped rewards on the tour.
Sinner and Alcaraz have shared the last nine slams, and there is no doubt that they are currently at the peak of their powers.
While Alcaraz has won the last five slams, Sinner has won the four Majors. Alcaraz recently won the Australian Open after beating Novak Djokovic, whereas Sinner was knocked out in the semifinals by the Serbian.
Wawrinka, who has won three Slam titles in his career, highlighted the difference between the previous and current generations’ level.
Speaking to Reem Abulleil, the Swiss star said: “I think the evolution of the game is, right now, the level is really high, that’s for sure.
“The new generation is always going to be better than the last generation. We can see that,” he added, before explaining a key difference between the eras.
“A little bit changed with the conditions and the balls, the tournaments being a bit slower. The game style is a little bit different.
“But in general, I always try to improve myself, play my best tennis, and find a way against players against me.”
The former World No.3 feels the current generation of players is better than the previous generation, which had players like Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
He responded: “Yeah, I think if you look at the level right now of Jannik and Carlos, they’ve been crazy high… crazy high level.
“You have Novak still in the fight with them. And as a fan of tennis in general, it’s amazing to watch that. I had the chance to play Jannik many times. Last few times was really tough. And hopefully I can play Carlos once before I stop playing.”
Wawrinka is currently plying his trade in the Dubai Tennis Championship.
