Jannik Sinner became the US Open champion after beating home favorite Taylor Fritz at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York on Sunday. Sinner registered a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 against the American to win his second Slam of the year.
The Italian was able to hit the ground running as he broke Fritz’s serve in the opening game of the match after winning the toss. However, Fritz was able to break back to level terms but Sinner won the last three games to take the opening set.
Sinner then broke Fritz’s serve in the 10th game of the second set to take a 2-0 lead. However, the American had a golden opportunity to take the match into the fourth set but he could not hold his serve in the third set after taking a 5-4 lead.
Sinner dedicated the US Open victory to his ailing aunt. Earlier, during the trophy ceremony, Sinner said: “This title for me means so much; the last period of my career was not easy. There is my team who supports me every day, the people who are close to me.
“I love tennis, I practise a lot for these kind of stages, but off the court there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt who is really not feeling well health wise. I don’t know how much I’ll still have her in my life. It’s so nice I can still share a positive moment with her.”
Earlier in the season, Sinner won the Australian Open after beating Daniil Medvedev in the final. The Italian is 55-5 in the ongoing season and thus he has ticked almost all the right boxes.
“So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia,” said Sinner. “Playing so well there gave me confidence. The work never stops. I know I can still improve, as we saw today, a couple of things. But you have to be proud with what you have and the rest you have to work for it. I can’t wait for my continued process.”
Sinner had earlier became the first player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.
