Toni Nadal has opened up on Rafael Nadal’s injury-prone career. Toni observed Nadal’s career from close quarters as his coach and saw his nephew struggle with multiple injuries throughout his glorious career.
Nadal’s career was continuously hampered by injuries and his chronic foot injury troubled him the most. However, despite struggling with so many injury woes, Nadal never gave up and kept training hard to reap rewards at the top level.
Nadal recently retired after Spain was knocked out of the Davis Cup quarterfinals by the Netherlands.
“Of course I saw him suffer. But I got so used to seeing him suffer so many times during his tennis life,” Toni said on ATP Tour.
“Many times he had bad injuries, injuries that looked like they were going to impair him and even prevent him from playing anymore. Because I got so used to that, I wasn’t surprised to see him suffer a bit at the end. The truth is that, even seeing him suffer, I think Rafael can’t complain because life has treated him very well.”
Toni added he is pleased that Nadal never veered off the track and kept his focus to achieve everything in the game.
“I feel very happy about everything that he’s achieved, obviously on court because of everything he won. But, above all, the most notable thing, which really pleases me as a relative, is seeing how a boy who had a dream of being a great tennis player did everything possible without losing his way.”
Nadal won 22 Grand Slam titles in his glorious career and he will be proud of his career.
