If Ravi Shastri continues to do a good job, there is no need to remove him: Kapil Dev

India’s former World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev believes there is no need to remove Ravi Shastri if he continues to do a good job for the national team.

Shastri’s contract as the head coach of the Indian team will expire after the upcoming T20 World Cup and there could be a change in coaching roles if India don’t go on to win the T20I showpiece.

India hasn’t been able to savour success in the big events in the last eight years and the Cricket Advisory Committee could decide to change the main coach. One of the options for the Indian team is to give head coach role to former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid, who is currently named as the head coach for the Sri Lanka tour.

Dravid has all the experience under his belt and he has done a fine job while coaching the team at the Under-19 and India A level. The former Indian captain was able to get the results and also led India to glory in the Under-19 2018 World Cup.

On the other hand, Ravi Shastri has also done a fine job as the team’s head coach. India has won two big series in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21 under the coaching of Ravi Shastri. The pace battery has taken giant strides for the Indian team, which has played a key role in their success in the overseas conditions. However, a big ICC trophy has eluded the Indian team under the reign of Ravi Shastri.

“I don’t think there is any need to speak about it. Let this Sri Lanka series get over. We’ll get to know the kind of performance our team has dished out. If you’re trying to shape a new coach, there’s nothing wrong with it. Then again, if Ravi Shastri continues to do a good job, there’s no reason to remove him either. Only time will tell. Before that, I think it will put unnecessary pressure on our coaches and players,” the former India captain said on the Wah Cricket Show on ABP News.

The former all-rounder added that Indian team has a potent bench strength and it is great that the young players are getting the opportunity they deserve.

“India has a big bench strength. If players get the opportunity and India can assemble two teams that can claim to win in both England and Sri Lanka, there is nothing better. If the youngsters get the opportunity, there’s nothing wrong with it. But if it is up to the team management to decide whether they should apply such pressure on two teams simultaneously,” Kapil pointed out.
