Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has rated the current Indian team under Virat Kohli as the best in the history of Indian cricket. The Virat Kohli-led is one of the most consistent teams in the world and they have delivered the goods in almost all the conditions. Kohli is known to get the best out of his players and he has lead the team from the front.
Kohli had become the first Indian captain to savour success in the Australian conditions when India won the Border-Gavaskar series by 2-1. India once again replicated their success in Australia as they won under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane.
Kohli has most Test wins as an Indian captain as he won 35 matches in the 59 Tests he has lead. Meanwhile, the Little Master also likened Kohli’s team with the legendary West Indies team under Clive Lloyd and Steve Waugh’s Australia that were a force to reckon with through 1975-1990 and 1995-2010 respectively.
“It certainly is, look at the way they are consistently, regularly, winning matches and therefore. You know with Steve Waugh’s team in the 90s. Then you look at the West Indies team’s dominance under Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards and Brian Lara sort of for a few years. So when you have a team which is as good as West Indies and Australia in its history perhaps. In 1970s through 1980s also there were teams that won consistently. This team has won everywhere,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Meanwhile, India was not given the praise it deserved after they had defeated Australia in 2018-19 series as David Warner and Steve Smith were serving their ball-tampering bans. However, the current Indian team was able to stun Australia when they had a full-strength team in the recent tour.
“In Australia, this time around, Steve Smith, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne all were there. I think it’s raised the bar considerably. So clearly, yes. This Indian team, when you look at the history of Indian cricket, this Indian team would be the best of them all,” he added.
The current Indian team has come up with collective efforts and the pace bowling battery has played a key role in the success of the team in the overseas conditions. This team is yet to savour success in England, South Africa and New Zealand and if they can manage to do that, they will go down in the annals of World Cricket.
India currently leads the four-match series against England by 2-1.
