Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar reckons Rohit Sharma’s Test future is in troubled waters after he had a forgettable Border-Gavaskar series against Australia. After missing the opening Test for personal reasons, Rohit scored only 31 runs in the next five innings at an average of 6.20.
Amid form slump, Rohit decided to opt out of the fifth Test match as he said the team could not afford to carry many out-of-form batters.
Meanwhile, Manjrekar noted that Rohit Sharma’s defense was getting breached on the Indian pitches as well. Rohit could only manage 42 runs in two Test matches against Bangladesh at 10.50 whereas he gathered 91 runs at an average of 15.17 against New Zealand.
Manjrekar highlighted that things will not get easier for Rohit Sharma on the tough tour of England.
Sanjay Manjrekar said on ESPN Cricinfo, “He’s opted out on form and it’s not like things are going to get easier. The next challenge is going to be England. It will be that same line outside the off stump. That is a headache for the chairman of selectors. He’s got to keep it simple and forget the effect those decisions will have.
“His [Rohit’s] defense was getting breached in India on Indian pitches, so that’s a serious cause for concern. KL Rahul-Jaiswal is a better opening stand looking at Rohit Sharma’s form,” the 59-year-old added.
Adding further, Manjrekar reckons Rohit is not making the same sacrifices which former batters like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid made to prolong their respective careers.
“I don’t think Rohit Sharma is making enough sacrifices to have one final burst – the kind of sacrifices Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar made at the end of their careers with regard to fitness and the preparation,” the former Mumbai batter commented.
Rohit Sharma is under the scanner for his poor form and he will need to turn the tables quickly.
