Indian Super League runners up ATK Mohun strengthen their last line of defence as they roped in Amrinder Singh from Champions Mumbai City FC. The Mariners announced it on their social media handles which happens to be one of the biggest transfers in Indian football this season.
Amrinder was exceptional for the Islanders last season and was one of the biggest pillars of success for Sergio Lobera’s men as they went on to win the normal league season and then also clinched the playoffs both times beating ATKMB. The Punjabi goalkeeper made 61 saves last season with a mammoth 10 clean sheets.
The 28-year-old custodian has plenty of experience in the Indian football circuit. He learned the ropes at the Under-18 Pune FC side and later got promoted to the senior team. His first appearance in the Indian Super League was with Atletico de Kolkata way back in 2015. Since then he has not looked back and has represented some of the top teams in the country. Amrinder has had two stints with Bengaluru FC and was a mainstay for Mumbai City FC before his move to ATK Mohun Bagan.
The former Mumbai City FC captain has reportedly signed a whopping five year deal with the Mariners as Antonio Habas and his men look to improve on their previous season by clinching the trophy.
“Even though I played in Kolkata before, it was for a very short time. This joining, of course, is going to be a new chapter in my football career. Winning all the trophies for Mumbai last year was a memorable event in my life. I want the same success in the Green-Maroon jersey next season,” Amrinder said to the ATKMB media team on his transfer.
“There are three reasons behind coming to Kolkata. They are the support of a huge number of ATK Mohun Bagan supporters, the football philosophy of the principal owner of the team Sanjiv Goenka and the glorious history of football of this city.”
The 28-year old who won the ISL Best Goalkeeper award in 2016 for his heroics for the Islanders had great things to say about his new coach Antonio Lopez Habas.
“I played for a while in the second edition of the ISL under the coaching of Habas. Everyone knows about his success in ISL. Habas’s football philosophy always attracts me,” he concluded.
