Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembelé’s Euro 2020 campaign is over as the French star has been forced to pull out of the tournament all due to an injury he sustained in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hungary.
The 24 year old forward entered in the game against Hungary as a substitute but later got replaced. Manager Didier Deschamps, who won the world cup in Russia with almost the same squad, confirmed after the match it was a knee tendon problem.
Initial reports suggested that he might miss the Portugal game on Wednesday, but later confirmation from Les Bleus camp confirmed that the tournament is over for the Barcelona forward and he has left the France squad.
There are rumours that France will not call up a replacement for Ousmaan Dembelè but Les Bleus has no problem in picking up an attacking team as the squad is full of quality forwards.
The French football team’s twitter handle confirmed that the 24-year old former Borussia Dortmund star will miss the rest of the tournament after sustaining an injury in the 1-1 draw game against Hungary.
Although there is no official update on how serious Dembele’s injury is or how long he might stay away from the football field, there are conflicting reports flying about.
The injury will certainly be a big blow to Dembele who featured regularly for Barcelona and had largely managed to put his injury problems aside last season. But the injury will not only halt his duties for the national team, but it will also affect his future with Barcelona as Dembele might be out of contract next summer. The Catalonian club reportedly wants to extend his contract but they might sell him if he doesn’t sign on.
Barcelona are due back for pre-season medical checks on July 9 ahead of the first training session on July 12, while the new season is due to kick-off on 14-15 August.
