Mohun Bagan Super Giant head coach Jose Molina confirmed that his team will be without key players Dimitrios Petratos, Ashique Kuruniyan, and Greg Stewart in their upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) clash against Punjab FC on December 26.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Molina also revealed the unavailability of goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh and midfielder Glenn Martins, compounding the team’s challenges.
Despite the setbacks, Molina expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to perform. “Yes, we have fewer options, but there are still good players. I’m sure we will have a really good team. Hopefully, we can have a good performance and achieve the three points in New Delhi,” he said.
Molina addressed questions about captain Subhasish Bose, who was seen training with a protective face mask after sustaining an injury in the previous game against FC Goa. The coach clarified that Bose’s participation would depend on medical clearance.
“It’s not a risk (playing with a mask). If the doctor says he is available with the mask, then there’s no risk,” Molina explained.
The Mariners, who are leading the league halfway through the season, suffered their second defeat of the campaign in their last match, a 2-1 loss to FC Goa. The team now faces a resurgent Punjab FC, currently in the top six after a dramatic turnaround from their struggles last season.
Molina acknowledged the challenge posed by Punjab but emphasized his team’s collective approach. “To me, football is a whole (unit). I cannot divide the football into defence and attack. For me, it’s a team,” he stated.
Under Molina, Mohun Bagan has established a reputation for defensive solidity, conceding the fewest goals in the league this season and keeping the most clean sheets. This has been instrumental in their rise to the top of the standings.
The Mariners also hold a perfect record against Punjab, winning all four previous encounters, including a thrilling Durand Cup quarterfinal earlier this year, which they won 6-5 on penalties. As they prepare to face Punjab FC in the national capital, the team will aim to maintain their dominance and finish the calendar year on a high.
While injuries have left Mohun Bagan’s squad thin, Molina’s tactical acumen and the team’s depth will be put to the test. With a victory, the Mariners could strengthen their position at the summit and set the tone for the second half of the season. For Punjab FC, the match is an opportunity to further cement their place in the playoff race.
