Mohun Bagan Super Giant Eyes Consolidation Against Struggling Hyderabad FC in ISL 2024-25 Clash

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) will aim to solidify its position atop the Indian Super League (ISL) standings when it takes on a struggling Hyderabad FC at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday.

The first match of the new year promises intrigue, as the reigning champions look to continue their stellar form. With nine wins, two draws, and just two losses from 13 matches, Mohun Bagan sits comfortably on 29 points. A win against Hyderabad would further their lead in the race for the League Shield.

In stark contrast, Hyderabad FC has endured a dismal season. The 2022 champions have managed only two wins and two draws while suffering nine defeats, leaving them second-last in the standings with just eight points.

MBSG enters the contest as the clear favourite, especially given their unbeaten streak against Hyderabad in their last five ISL meetings (three wins and two draws). However, the Mariners face some challenges, with injuries and suspensions affecting key players.

Dimitri Petratos, Ashique Kuruniyan, and Apuia (serving a suspension) will be unavailable, but the return of Scottish playmaker Greg Stewart after a three-match absence will bolster the squad. Stewart’s presence could be pivotal in unlocking Hyderabad’s defense.

Consistency in the attacking third has been a hallmark of Mohun Bagan’s success. Averaging 24.1 touches in the opposition box per game—the highest in the league—the Mariners have been relentless in their forward play. Defensively, they’ve been equally strong, boasting six clean sheets and conceding the fewest goals (13) in the league.

“We are at the top of the table, and Hyderabad FC is in a lower position, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy,” warned head coach Jose Molina. “We have to work very hard and stay focused for the full 90 minutes.”

Hyderabad FC has struggled to find form, particularly in the attacking department. The team averages a league-low 15.4 touches in the opposition box and has failed to score in its last two away games against Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC. Interim head coach Shameel Chembakath remains optimistic about turning things around.

“We’ll focus on controlling the game’s tempo and being patient. Improvements are needed offensively and defensively, and we aim to deliver a better performance,” said Chembakath.

As Mohun Bagan chases another three points to extend its dominance, Hyderabad will be desperate to salvage its faltering campaign. The Mariners’ attacking firepower and defensive solidity make them the favourites, but Hyderabad’s hunger to avoid yet another loss could make for a fiercely contested clash.
