Former World No. 1 Andy Murray has qualified for the main draw in the upcoming Australian Open 2021 after he received a wildcard entry from the organisers. Murray is currently ranked at the 122nd place in the ATP Rankings, which meant he couldn’t qualify on the basis of rankings as the top 104 players qualify for the main draw of the tournament.
Furthermore, Murray also didn’t sign up for the qualifiers of the event, which are all set to be hosted at Doha, Qatar. When Murray’s name was missing from the list of the qualifiers, it gave a hint that he could receive a wild card entry.
Before playing in the Australian Open 2021 as a wild card entrant, the British player will take part in the ATP 250 tournament in Delray Beach. In fact, Murray has also qualified for ATP 250 as a wildcard entrant.
Murray is looking forward to a good season in 2021 and he wants to hit the ground running at Delray Beach.
“I am looking forward to starting the 2021 season in Delray Beach. This event will be a good test for me and I’m excited to be back playing on the Tour,” Murray said.
Meanwhile, Murray had participated in the 2020 French Open via a wild card but he was thrashed in the first round by Stan Wawrinka. However, Murray’s decision to enter a major tournament as a wild card entrant hasn’t gone down well with a lot of Tennis pundits.
Murray has struggled to get going on the court after his major hip surgery back in 2018. Thus, the Briton will look to turn the tables in the 2021 season.
On the other hand, Murray had skipped the Australian Open in 2020 and he will aim to turn his career around in the next season.
