Former World No.1 Boris Becker believes Novak Djokovic has admitted he can’t realistically win a Slam amid Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance. The last eight Majors have been won by Alcaraz and Sinner and Djokovic has failed to go all the way.
The Serbian has won a total of 24 Grand Slams in his glorious career and he is still hunting for the record-breaking 25th Major, which would help him leapfrog Margaret Court, for the most successful tennis player (male or female) of all-time.
Boris Becker said on the Becker-Petkovic podcast, “I think, now he’s admitted that he can’t realistically win a Grand Slam because of his age and the strength of the youngsters [Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner].”
On the other hand, Djokovic admitted he didn’t have much left in the tank after he lost in three sets against Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open 2025 semifinal. The Serbian could not compete in the third set and had to give up on a lot of points as he ran out of gas.
Djokovic had said in the post-match press conference, “I can do only as much as I can do. And yeah it will be very difficult for me in the future to overcome the hurdle of Sinner and Alcaraz in the best of five in the Grand Slams. I think I have a better chance in best of three but best of five, it’s tough. I’m not giving up on Grand Slams in that regard. Having said that, I’m going to continue fighting and trying to get to the finals and fight for another trophy at least. But it’s going to be a very, very difficult task.”
Djokovic is still fit as a fiddle, and there is no doubt he is the third-best player in the world after Sinner and Alcaraz. How can he cross the Alcaraz-Sinner hurdle? He would need to figure that out.
