Italian young Tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has retained his Sofia Open title after he defeated Gael Monfils in the final on Sunday. The 20-year old Sinner defended his title as he beat the Frenchman in straight sets by 6-3, 6-4.
The youngster was able to bring his best in the final as he came up with a potent serve. The Italian won 93% of points on his first serve and dominated the contest. Furthermore, Monfils had two chances to break Sinner’s serve but could not grab his opportunity.
Sinner won a total of 59 points as compared to Monfils’ 46 and clinched his second title at Sofia Open.
Sinner feels the level of Tennis was high as there were long rallies and it was the best match he played during the entire week.
“The level was high today,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “We had long, long rallies and it was physical as well. I am happy to be the winner here in Sofia again. I think it is a very nice tournament. It was the best match [I have played this week] because I had to.”
“It is never easy playing against Gael, we’ve had many tough matches,” Sinner added. “I think in the crucial moments I was a bit luckier than him, which helped me a lot.”
On the other hand, this was Sinner’s third tour title win of the ongoing season. Earlier in the season, the young player had won Great Ocean Road Open and ATP Citi Open events. Sinner is currently placed in 14th place in the latest ATP rankings and it will be interesting to note if he would be able to qualify for the Nitto ATP finals, which will be played from November 14 to 21 in Turin.
