Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli reckons Novak Djokovic is a top favorite for the upcoming US Open. Djokovic has been in sublime form as he has already won all the three majors of the ongoing season and he is going to gear up for the Calendar slam after he could not go all the way in the Tokyo Olympics.
Djokovic was beaten in the semifinals in three sets by Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who went on to clinch Gold in the end. Thus, Djokovic will be hungry and highly motivated to win the US Open and join Don Budge and Rod Laver in the elite list of Tennis players who have won Calendar slam.
Djokovic was defaulted in the third round of US Open 2020 in his match against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and he will aim to go all the way in the coveted tournament.
The Serbian is on the cusp of making history as he can become the first male player to win Calendar Slam since Rod Laver if he goes all the way in the upcoming major.
“I would not understand if we do not place him as a big favourite. For me he is the big favourite,” Bartoli said.
“It’s a little easier. He has a day off between each match, he has time to think about each victory, he has time to rest before the next game.”
“I think the Grand Slams are definitely playing in favour of Novak Djokovic. To be honest, I can’t see him failing to win the US Open.” she added.
There is no doubt that Djokovic brings his best in the big matches of the big events and he is going to be a red-hot favorite in the US Open. There is no stopping Djokovic right now and it is going to be a herculean task for other players to put brakes on him.
The US Open will begin from 30th August in New York.
