Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar feels Sanju Samson is not getting his chances for the national team as he is not consistent.
Samson scored a breathtaking knock of 119 runs off just 63 balls against Punjab Kings in the team’s opening match of IPL 2021. However, the right-hander has gone cold after that game.
The stylish batsman, who has impressed with his strokeplay, once again got off to start against Royal Challengers Bangalore as he scored 21 runs off 18 balls but couldn’t convert it into a substantial score. Samson smashed a six against Washington Sundar but he was dismissed on the next ball. Furthermore, Samson hasn’t been consistent in the domestic circuit.
The right-hander has got all the talent under his belt and he is also technically correct but inconsistency is leading to his downfall. RR doesn’t have a potent middle order and thus the onus to deliver is on the shoulders of Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and David Miller. However, the trio was dismissed cheaply against RCB but Shivam Dube and Rahul Tewatia were able to take their team to a fighting total of 177 runs.
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said: “First and foremost, the captain (Sanju Samson) has to stand up and deliver. He did it in the first game but that has been the problem with him. One of the reasons why he has not been featuring in the Indian team is that he scores runs in one game and then he looks to do it and carry on as if he’s batting in the next game from the same game, and that’s how he keeps getting out.”
