The new year has started on a dramatic note for Indian cricket, with Rohit Sharma stepping aside from the Sydney Test to make way for Shubman Gill in the playing XI. Sharma’s recent poor form has cast a shadow over his Test career, raising questions about his future in the longest format. Jasprit Bumrah, who captained India in the first Test, is once again leading the side as the team looks to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Speculation surrounding Sharma’s future isn’t limited to Test cricket. According to a report from My Khel, the Indian cricket management is considering alternatives to Sharma’s leadership even in the ODI format, suggesting a potential shift in the team’s leadership dynamics.
If the management decides to relieve Rohit Sharma of the ODI captaincy, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is reportedly the frontrunner to take over. Pandya, who has previously led India in white-ball formats, has been praised for his composure under pressure and strategic acumen.
“Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy,” a source told My Khel.
Pandya’s leadership skills were on display during the IPL and in several limited-overs series where he led a younger Indian squad to success. His ability to inspire the team and make tactical decisions on the field has earned him the trust of the management.
The report also sheds light on the management’s long-term plans for leadership. While Shubman Gill has shown immense promise, insiders suggest he needs more time and grooming to be considered for a captaincy role. Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav, despite being a T20 stalwart, has yet to cement his place in the 50-over format.
“Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY’s ODI performances haven’t been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable,” the source added.
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the line and significant decisions looming in white-ball cricket, the start of 2025 is shaping up to be a defining moment for Indian cricket. If Pandya indeed takes over the ODI captaincy, it could mark the beginning of a new era.
Rohit Sharma’s role, both as a player and a leader, will be closely scrutinized in the months ahead as India’s cricketing strategy continues to evolve.
